It’s been an icon to many baseball fans since 1947, and after decades of seeing the Cleveland Indians Chief Wahoo logo, it will be dissappearing from all things Cleveland Indians related in the 2019 season.
I can’t say I’m surprised, I’m really not. For many years there have been protests from Native Americans and others, pushing to get the chief out of the franchise. I get it, they have good reason to. I just think it’s unfortunate that what I’ve looked at as a friendly, smiley Native American character that has represented a professional team for so long is going away, nothing more. More so, there are plenty of other professional sports teams that have logos which can be considered offensive to other cultures, races, etc., and it’s unlikely we will ever see them get changed. Why is that? Is one logo more offensive than the other? What about Notre Dame’s fighting Irishman? Alright, I feel like I’ve already gotten too political for a music website blog post. The ultimate point here is, shouldn’t all franchise/logos be on a even playing field? (pun intended)
