Admittedly, I don’t go to the theater to catch a flick very often. It’s not that I don’t enjoy going, but I just tend to go when I really want to see a certain movie, otherwise a just wait until it comes out digitally or on Bluray. With that being said, I will consider getting Movie Pass, now that the monthly membership has dropped from $50 to $10.
Netflix Co-founder Mitch Lowe runs the startup MoviePass, which works with the majority of theaters with the program. You sign up, get the app for your phone, pick your movie, and go to the theater! Basically it’s the Netflix business model for the theater. With less people going to the movies these days, something needed to change, and Lowe’s solution was making MoviePass more affordable.
Not every theater chain is liking the new lower price, though, and AMC (the largest theater chain in the United States) has threatened to sue MoviePass. We’ll see how that pans out.
It sure is nice to save on ticket costs, because you will stay have to pay for the typically high priced concessions.
