City Council Member Jacqueline Marcou has lead a charge to add some color to downtown La Crosse. Marcou saw murals painted all over Madison on a recent trip and thought we could do the same thing. So, after approaching the city’s art board and getting all the ducks in a row, she tapped Landon Sheely to paint “Helping Hands” on the Main Street parking ramp downtown. The mural will depict three caroonish characters lifting each other towards the sky. Sheely told the La Crosse Tribune, “I was trying to think of something that did speak to the community, that wasn’t pushing any boundaries, so-to speak, making it community-friendly.”
I, for one, love it. Sheely has some art on the outside walls behind The Root note and I have always loved his style. More importantly, this mural will add character to a downtown that could really use it. I love being in cities that have full, big, murals throughout it. I love seeing the splash of color on a otherwise charmless building. And, hey, I can get behind building more parking ramp if they are going to make them look cool!
