I think just about everyone has a slightly strange combo that we enjoy on a sandwich. But Date Earnhardt Jr. takes the CAKE………………………“I don’t eat the banana and mayo anymore, and here’s why. I have changed my mayonnaise sandwich to a different style. I did eat those as a kid. So when (longtime NASCAR sponsor) Hellmann’s is like, ‘Hey man, that’s a strange sandwich, so we want to do this program around strange sandwiches and would you do that?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes.’ We made the sandwich, and it blows up on the internet, and oh boy! Some people are like, ‘Yeah, I ate those as a kid, but the majority of the people hated it and thought we were crazy people and needed to be locked up. I don’t want to go around shouting it from the roof that I ate that sandwich when I was a kid.”
“So what I’ve been trying to do is push into this new direction another sandwich that I ate when I was younger, and it’s any kind of deli meat — I prefer ham, but probably these days, I’d use turkey. But ham, Doritos, and mayonnaise and pickles. Everybody likes to put the crunch on there, some people do Fritos. I love the Doritos. I don’t like to crunch them. I like to try not to break the Dorito before I eat it.
“So this is how it goes together, you put the mayonnaise down — because Hellmann’s is gonna say, ‘Oh this is Dale’s favorite sandwich. This is how you make it: He puts mayonnaise on both sides.’ It’s not true. They want you to use more mayonnaise. You put mayonnaise on one side, put the Doritos in there because if they do break into small pieces, they’ll stick to the mayonnaise. All right? and then you put the meat, and then you put large pickles sliced long ways — not pickle chips, long sliced pickles and, deal.
“The one thing I have to do is dry the pickles. So I take the pickle and put it on a napkin and dry it, pat it dry on both sides so the pickle doesn’t soak into the bread. Let me tell you right now, if you’re going to count calories, you’re going to enjoy what the hell you eat. You’re going to make sure it’s good
