Looks like there will NOT be a new tax levied soon! A proposed wheel tax for the city of La Crosse has been postponed indefinitely by the La Crosse Judiciary and Administration Committee. They met Tuesday evening and decided to push back the proposal before hearing from concerned city drivers. The tax would have been per vehicle for those that live within the city. Money raised through the tax would have been used on needed road repairs, but the city’s mayor says a $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration announced Monday should help in the meantime.
La Crosse County voters will still see a referendum question for a separate wheel tax at the County level on the November ballot. That question will not result in an immediate tax, but would be used for future proposals.
